Google Search is constantly improving how it connects users to helpful information. To that end, Google launched the “helpful content update,” which is part of a more significant effort to ensure that users see more original, helpful information created by people, for people, in search results. This is big news in the SEO world.

What Does This Google Algorithm Update Change?

Google started rolling out the update in late August and initially focused on global English content. According to Google, the upgrade will affect Search for the time being (and not Discover or other surfaces).

Google is attempting to differentiate between “unhelpful information” and stuff designed actually to assist users. Their piece contrasts “search engine-first” content generation with “people-first” content creation – pages that simply aggregate content from various sources, for example, without adding any unique value or insights.

Google stated that it wants to “reward material where visitors believe they’ve had a gratifying experience, whereas content that does not fulfill a visitor’s expectations will not do as well.”

On the content side, how can you adjust and cope with the upcoming changes?

Things To Consider With The New Google Algorithm Update

Here are steps that Google recommends in creating content that can be successful with the new update.

Focus on people-first content

  • People-first content writers prioritize developing engaging content while leveraging SEO best practices to provide additional value to searchers.
  • Establish an existing or intended audience for your business or site and create content that is useful and related to your service or niche.
  • Create content that demonstrates first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge.
  • Ensure that your site has a primary focus or purpose
  • Keep in mind Google’s core updates and product reviews.

Avoid creating content for search engines first

When applied to people-first content, SEO is a beneficial activity. On the other hand, content developed primarily for search engine traffic is highly associated with content that searchers find disappointing. How can you avoid focusing just on the search engine-first approach?

  • Make the content original and of quality.
  • Produce contents that are specific to your niche and for your particular audience
  • Don’t write for a particular word count without adding value to your content.
  • Avoid creating content that isn’t in your niche and is just to get search traffic.
  • Guarantee access to helpful information and valuable perspectives in your content for your audience

Our Take on This New Google Algorithm Update

Google aims to reward content creators that focus extensively on a subject, have deep expertise in an area, and can demonstrate first-hand competence and depth of knowledge. Focus on what you have expertise in and provide top-notch high-quality content that can help users. Provide unique insights and don’t artificially increase word count. Avoid overpromising and underdelivering.

Don’t try to cover too many topics and end up underdelivering because it’s not your niche. To put it another way, stay in your lane, in a good and right way, of course.

Are you “staying in your lane” and optimizing all the right efforts? Even good content can get buried without the proper off-page and on-page SEO strategy. We can help!
