I first came across this cleverly branded children’s book collection via social media and I am so glad I did. Their mission is to facilitate fearless conversations between kids and grownups about life’s most challenging, important, and empowering topics. How cool is that?
The first book I purchased from the site was A Kids Book About Bullying as we were dealing with a situation I wasn’t exactly sure how to handle. I was so thankful to find a book that I could read with my five-year-old to create some helpful conversation about the topic. That seemed to really help ease some anxiety and create empathy. A few months later when on a drive home from daycare I was asked “so is God real or not?” (gulp). I turned back to the site to order A Kids Book About God.
We have also recently just received A Kids Book About Racism, A Kids Book About Empathy, and A Kids Book About Money. I’m looking forward to working these new books into our evening book reading.
Each book is penned by a singular author or duo, with true domain expertise and an authentic point-of-view on each topic. The authors are comprised of entrepreneurs, parents, thought leaders, and everyday people who are emblematic of their book’s topic and form the most diverse author lineup in the children’s book industry in age, race, and gender. The founder is also a Portland dad with a great story.
“Today’s millennial parents, myself included, are raising kids in a time when big, important topics are all but unavoidable to address with our kids,” said Jelani Memory, founder and CEO of A Kids Book About. “The idea behind the founding of this company is rooted in the belief that kids are ready to talk about challenging and complicated topics, and it’s actually their grownups who need help getting the conversation started. We believe these books will be the most important books that kids read.”
I’m certainly a fan (oh and did I mention the books were on Oprah’s Favorite Things 2020?) and I highly recommend them for any kiddos 5+. Each book profile also gives a suggested age range. Happy reading (and parenting)!
